New York Times and USA Today Bestseller Lists

.
This is the part where I wake up and I'm back in seventh grade, studying the FOIL (First, Outer, Inner, Last) method for solving polynomial equations in pre-algebra.

The Breach is #29 on the New York Times mass-market paperback extended list, and #124 on the USA Today list. I remember reading these lists all the time in the newspapers, back in the mid-90's, around the time I was getting out of high school and considering taking a crack at writing. (I ended up going with screenplays for a long time, first, but obviously I had the book bug in me from the beginning.) Someone in my family must have had a subscription to USA Today, because it was always around, and I checked out the bestseller list every Thursday. Would've been fun to know that seven or eight hundred Thursdays later, I'd be on it. (For the record, neither of these listings will appear in the print versions of their respective papers; NYT prints the top 20, and USA Today prints the top 50, while the papers' websites show the full lists--and I won't be dwelling on this distinction for much longer than it takes to write this sentence.)

So many people to thank: Janet Reid, coolest agent in the business, and everyone else at FinePrint. My editor at HarperCollins, Diana Gill, as well as Christine Maddalena, Pamela Spengler-Jaffee, Danielle Bartlett, Michael Brennan, Carl Lennertz, and probably a few hundred others I just haven't gotten to meet yet. And a special thank you to Sarah Durand. I also want to thank Lee Child again (I was lucky enough to be able to thank him in person at Bouchercon) for a cover blurb which is probably having a bigger influence on potential buyers than I can know.

Above all, everyone out there who's reading the book. In the most literal sense, I can't say it enough: THANK YOU!!!

My son picked your book up at the airport to read on his way home for a visit and then left it here--so I read it. Pretty unlikely read for me but I read a couple chapters and then was grudgingly compelled to find out what happened. Thanks for the entertainment.

I picked up your book Tuesday afternoon, and finished it at 2:30 this morning - I couldn't put it down!

This was a great read, one of those rare books that come along (out of nowhere it seems) and you can't stop reading it until it's done. You're left wanting more!

My only criticism? I wanted to read more of your upcoming second book "Ghost Country"! :)

Thanks for a wonderful book!

One of the best books I've read in a long time. It is right up there with Vince Flynn and Brad Thor, my top two favorite authors...and now you are the third. Please make Travis Chase a Novel series, I love authors who write series, I feel the more I read about their adventures the more I become intimate with the characters.

Thanks again for a great adventure, thriller novel. Keep up the good work and I will buy everyone you write.

Thanks to Suzy for posting this news on facebook so I could finally read a book that I couldn't put down once it was started. It has been awhile. Bravo Patrick and pleased to know that more are coming. Judy

I just finished the book, and I have to say, I loved it. I enjoyed the fact that it kept me guessing for the entire book, and I enjoyed even more the fact that all of my guesses were wrong, which doesn't happen to me all that often when I read a novel.

I read the snippet included from the second book in the series, and I can't wait until it's released. Those few pages already have questions burning in my mind, and I eagerly await the release of Ghost Town so that I can answer them.

Great Job!

Loved the book! I can not wait for Ghost Country! I know it says fall of 2010 in the book, but I was hoping either it was already out or that you had other books out! Bummer, but what a great start! This was right up there with the Preston Child Agent Pendergast series for me...I can't wait to get my hands on the next one!

Thanks for giving us Travis Chase!

And how did your book signings in NY go?

I just finished reading the Breach and wanted to congratulate you for an awesome book. The clincher for me was when Paige said her favorite book passage was from Watership Down. That's my all-time favorite book, and of course, I looked up the passage. I think I get it. The world is a lot bigger than us, and life goes on. Anyway, I can't wait for your next book, which I guess comes out this fall?

Best I've read in a long time! I love F. Paul Wilson, Preston and Childs....I think you're better! And yes, I probably wouldn't have bought the book without Lee Childs cover blurb....I've read every one of his books. I'm gonna have to read Watership Down now.

I'm an instant fan...can't wait for Ghost Country!

Finished The Breach yesterday, it was stunningly awesome! I was hoping there was a back catalog of novels, and was depressed to find it was your only one so far - can't wait for Ghost Country either!

Bought your book last week in a hotel drugstore in Jamaica of all places. Aside from a Starwars themed book it was the only one that remotely appealed to me by just quickly perusing them. I finished it the next night. An excellent read!

Warning: SPOILERS ahead!

You have to suspend disbelieve a bit more than I prefer (someone builds an all-knowing super AI to counter a simple letter? Why not send another letter to arrive earlier? Why did the transfer of artifacts from the future stop after the Whisper? You'd think Paige would find out and send more letters warning about the whisper? Why did the Whisper try to start WW3 rather than focusing on the task at hand? Shouldn't tangent have known the disabling a nuke, once the core is exposed is pretty easy? No one worried about plutonium being dispersed in the building? It's no nuclear explosion but still a very messy dirty bomb after all.)

Anyway. It was wonderfully entertaining and easy to read. Certainly hard to put down. The only real problem was that I was out of reading material again so quickly :)

Thank you so much Patrick for this awesome book. I was actually just looking around for a book to read for free-reading in English class (I'm a sophomore), and it just sort of jumped out at me, so I read the back and immediately I was excited.
Normally, I absolutely HATE reading, but I can actually say this is my favorite book of all time.
I can't wait until Ghost Country comes out, thank you so much!

Great Book, nice to find a "new" author. The only thing I would say was the end seemed a tad rushed..or maybe I enjoyed it so much I didn't want it to end..:P
In this modern day one can empathize with Finn's demented views.
